Rhytidectomies, more commonly known as a facelift, are one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgeries in the United States. While the face isn’t actually being lifted, excess skin and fat is removed to tighten the skin and smooth out wrinkles, reducing the visible signs of aging. Facelifts are often considered the ultimate procedure for restoring youth. Here are a few things to expect in the aftermath of a facelift surgery:
- Immediately After Surgery
As you awaken from the surgery, your face may feel tight and you may feel cold. Feel free to discuss your feelings with the doctor and they will do what they can to accommodate you. Medications will be available to aid your discomfort and a large dressing will have been applied to your face. You will need someone to drive you home. - The Following Weeks
Soon, your dressing will be replaced with elastic wrap. Drainage tubes designed to reduce swelling and remove excess blood will be removed within several days. Bruising and swelling are a normal part of the healing process, so be sure to continue taking pain medication as you need it. Take daily walks to boost circulation in your legs, but also get plenty of rest. - Long Term
Within two weeks, you can begin wearing makeup and should be ready to return to work. You can resume your normal routine as your face continues to heal to its new placement. Keep up with the postoperative appointments with your plastic surgeon and your face should return to its natural setting.

Also known as chemosurgery, Mohs surgery is designed to treat common forms of skin cancer. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, with millions of people diagnosed with the condition annually. While everyday prevention through protection from ultraviolet rays with sunscreen and staying out of the sun during the hottest periods of the day are essential precautions to take, it is important to know that there are effective treatment options. To learn more about Mohs surgery, read on.
History: Although it has been around for nearly a hundred years, Mohs surgery has developed into one of the most advanced and effective treatments available for treating skin cancer. The success rate is nearly 99%, giving Mohs surgery the highest success rate for all treatments involving skin cancer.
Procedure: The basic concept behind Mohs surgery is to eliminate cancerous tissue while leaving healthy tissue intact. The four steps of the surgery are:
- Tumor Removal: The patient remains awake during the procedure, though a local anesthesia is administered. Using microscopic analysis, visible areas of the tumor are removed, along with a thin layer of the surrounding tissue.
- Examination: The tissue that was removed with the cancerous tissue is prepared on slides and examined under a microscope. If this tissue is found to be afflicted with cancer, the physician will remove another lay of tissue, analyzing layers until one is found to be cancer-free.
- Reconstruction: Upon elimination of all cancer, the Mohs surgeon will determine an appropriate course of action for the wound. Ideal, the area will remain functional and aesthetic, possibly requiring reconstructive surgery.
