What to Expect After Facelift Surgery

Last updated 3 months ago

Rhytidectomies, more commonly known as a facelift, are one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgeries in the United States. While the face isn’t actually being lifted, excess skin and fat is removed to tighten the skin and smooth out wrinkles, reducing the visible signs of aging. Facelifts are often considered the ultimate procedure for restoring youth. Here are a few things to expect in the aftermath of a facelift surgery:

  • Immediately After Surgery
As you awaken from the surgery, your face may feel tight and you may feel cold. Feel free to discuss your feelings with the doctor and they will do what they can to accommodate you. Medications will be available to aid your discomfort and a large dressing will have been applied to your face. You will need someone to drive you home.
  • The Following Weeks
Soon, your dressing will be replaced with elastic wrap. Drainage tubes designed to reduce swelling and remove excess blood will be removed within several days. Bruising and swelling are a normal part of the healing process, so be sure to continue taking pain medication as you need it. Take daily walks to boost circulation in your legs, but also get plenty of rest.
  • Long Term
Within two weeks, you can begin wearing makeup and should be ready to return to work. You can resume your normal routine as your face continues to heal to its new placement. Keep up with the postoperative appointments with your plastic surgeon and your face should return to its natural setting.
