Austin Services: External Ear Surgery

One of the many services that our Austin Surgeon provides is called otoplasty, or external ear surgery. Many people live with being teased as a child and even well into their adult years from having ears that protrude away from the side of the head. Individuals who wish to correct protruding ears can have their needs fully met by our surgeon.

Candidates for External Ear Surgery

External ear surgery can be performed on both children and adults. The surgery can be performed on children once their ears are fully formed, around age six. Generally, it is better to have the surgery performed by our Austin surgeon at a younger age, when the ear is more pliable. Getting the procedure done at a younger age will also spare the individual years of teasing and the kind of insecurities that can consequently develop over a long period of time. And when you stop to consider, the social and psychological impact of being teased is actually a primary reason for getting the surgery in the first place.

How is External Ear Surgery Performed?

To pin the ear back, an ellipse of skin is removed from the backside of the ear, where the cartilage is reshaped before sutures are placed, creating a fold which is usually lacking in external ear surgery patients. After the procedure, a compressive dressing is used for a couple of days. Afterwards, a swim band is worn for a few weeks, to support the new position of the ears as the tissues heal in place. Between the first and second week after surgery, sutures are removed.
