Austin Vein Removal – Varicose Veins 101

Varicose veins are characterized by bluish-colored bulging and twisted veins that most commonly occur in the legs and feet. 40% of all women and 15-20% of men between the ages of 40 and 50 are affected. By 70 years of age, approximately 70% of women are affected. Varicose veins are often mostly a cosmetic issue, but a lot of times, they are accompanied by swelling and discomfort in the legs that generally worsen over time. Our Austin vein removal clinic offers treatment options to help patients improve their overall quality of life.

How Varicose Veins are Formed

Varicose veins are a sign of poor blood circulation. Muscles and organs in the body receive freshly oxygenated blood via arteries as it is pumped out from the heart. The veins are responsible for delivering deoxygenated blood back to the heart for replenishment. Muscle contractions and hundreds of one-way valves along the walls of our veins are what help pump deoxygenated blood back up to the heart, against the pull of gravity. With age, these valves weaken and blood will leak back into the veins instead of to their intended destination. As a result, blood pools, causing veins to bulge.

Risk Factors

Women are very likely candidates for the vein removal procedure. They are much more prone to developing varicose veins, as female hormones are a contributing factor. Age is also a major contributing factor, as the valves in ones veins do eventually begin to succumb to years of wear and tear. Also, as you have probably heard, sitting or standing for long periods of time will also contribute to varicose veins, as it hinders proper circulation. Other factors that put extra strain on the veins include pregnancy and obesity. If your family has had a history of varicose veins, it also increases your chances of having them as well.

Treatment for Varicose Veins

Creating new habits may help alleviate symptoms of varicose veins and help keep your condition from worsening. Elevate your legs whenever possible, and wear compression stockings to help alleviate any discomfort. Try to avoid sitting or standing for long periods of time, and remember to take breaks. As muscle contractions help pump the blood back to the heart, exercise is highly recommended.
