Spider veins appear as red or purple thread-like structures on the skin surface, and can occur on the face, neck, chest and legs. They are superficial blood vessels that are found on almost everybody. In the legs, they can be found alone or in combination with varicose veins.

Alone, they are not a health risk but often are a cosmetic concern. Spider veins are generally an inherited condition occurring when small capillaries dilate on the surface of the skin. There are larger veins called reticular or “feeder” veins that are the source for spider veins. Spider veins can worsen for a variety of reasons.

As we age, the majority of us will see our small veins increasingly dilate just underneath the skin’s surface. Women are more commonly affected than men. There are many contributing factors, such as familial history, weight fluctuations, prolonged sitting or standing, heavy lifting, hormonal changes and limited exercise.

What are the benefits of spider vein treatments?

For a lot of people these veins are unsightly and thus the removal of them is the sole concern as they’re not a health risk when found alone. A more even tone of the skin once they’re removed is the ultimate goal.

What Is A Vein Treatment Like?

To treat spider veins, we use state-of-the-art technology and a unique combination therapy. Our approach involves the use of sclerotherapy with hypertonic saline followed by a vascular laser. Sclerotherapy involves injection of a sclerosing agent into the blood vessels causing the walls to become swollen and inflamed. Right afterwards, Nd: YAG laser light is then used to heat the vessels.
By causing “double damage” – the sclerosing agent and direct heat to the vessel walls – they collapse and disappear. During your consultation, you will be given recommendations tailored to your specific condition which may include one or both of these treatments.
Pain associated with treatment is minimal. Sclerotherapy will involve a slight needle prick and mild burning while the laser will produce a little cold stinging sensation.

How Can I Expect To Look Immediately After Vein Treatments?

The area of the injections will likely be red and maybe have the appearance of an ant bite. The area where the laser is used could also produce some redness and slight swelling. All of this should subside in the couple of days following treatment.

How Many Vein Treatments Will I Need?

Two to three sessions are usually required to achieve the maximum outcome.

What Results Can I Expect To See After Vein Treatments?

Our distinctive treatment approach will improve your appearance and, like with many patients, your self-confidence. The veins will begin to appear lighter after each session. The appearance of the vessels will continue to improve for up to two months after treatment.

FAQs

Is the treatment painful?
A topical numbing agent may be used in patients but is not necessary. If you are allergic to topical anesthesia, you can still receive sclerotherapy without numbing.
Can the veins come back?
After your sclerotherapy procedure, the treated veins do not return. However, we will also discuss with you lifestyle changes to help you prevent new spider veins and varicose veins from forming.
Is sclerotherapy safe?
Sclerotherapy is considered safe for most patients. During your initial consultation, we will go over your medical history and examine your veins to determine if you’re a good candidate for treatment. This will include going over your medications, health conditions you’re currently being treated for, and any allergies you have. For most healthy patients, sclerotherapy is safe with only mild, short-term side-effects.
What areas on the body can be treated with sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy can be administered almost anywhere on the body as long as the veins aren’t very large, such as with advanced varicose veins.
What is the recovery time following a sclerotherapy procedure?
One of the great things about a sclerotherapy procedure is that it carries no downtime. You will be able to immediately return to your regular routine. We even encourage you to continue your normal fitness routine, as it will help speed along recovery.
What kind of aftercare is necessary after a sclerotherapy procedure?
We will advise you to wear compression garments following your sclerotherapy procedure. This is to help speed up the healing process and improve your results.
What is the effectiveness of a sclerotherapy procedure? What if it didn’t work?
According to the Mayo Clinic, the success rate of sclerotherapy remains steady at approximately 60-80%. In the 20-40% of cases where treatment doesn’t show full results after a single treatment, the sclerotherapy procedure can be repeated to improve your results.
How does the sclerotherapy solution work?
After the provider administers the sclerosing agent, it will damage and scar the inside lining of the vein. This process is painless, so you won’t feel any of it as the vein ultimately collapses. The vein will close and fade over a period of a few weeks to months.
