What Is Kybella?
Kybella is the first and only FDA approved injectable treatment to improve the appearance of fat beneath the chin (submental fat) in men and women. If you are unsure about or uncomfortable with the idea of undergoing fat reduction surgery, such as liposuction, Kybella may just be right for you.
How does Kybella work?
The active ingredient in Kybella is deoxycholic acid— a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. Fat cleared from the treatment area is processed through your body’s natural metabolism.
When injected into marked areas underneath the chin, Kybella targets and destroys fat cells. Once those cells are destroyed, they are absorbed and expelled by the body. Once destroyed, the fat cells cannot store or accumulate fat.
While some results can be seen after a single treatment, most patients will need multiple treatments in order to attain their desired results. On average, patients typically need around three to four treatments. Treatments are scheduled around 6 to 8 weeks apart.
Some soreness, swelling, and bruising can be expected. Any pain or discomfort can be managed with over the counter medication. Swelling can make the area appear worse initially, but your appearance will improve as the swelling reduces. Swelling and bruising typically last for around three days.
What areas of treatment?
Kybella works on areas where it is very difficult to lose weight. For example, it will reduce the double chin, which is often a hereditary trait. It will also reduce the area around the “baby fat” armpit as well as back bra bulge.
What to expect?
Kybella is given by your licensed health care provider in the office. The process takes about 15 minutes. An individual may need up to 6 treatments which may be administered at 6 to 8 week intervals.
At the time of treatment, the area will be numbed with a topical cream. Once injected, the normal sensation feels like a temporary burn.
For some patients, the most downtime occurs after the first treatment. One should be able to resume normal daily activities. However, one should expect a little swelling so keep social and work commitments in mind when scheduling treatments.
The most common side effects include swelling, bruising, numbness, redness and areas of hardness.
How long do the results last?
