Areas that are safely treated include the face and bikini areas, armpits, back and legs. Those with darker hair are ideal patients for this procedure.
What are the benefits of laser hair removal?
Laser hair removal allows removal of unwanted body hair without damaging the delicate pores and structures of the skin. The laser that emits a gentle beam of light that passes through the skin to the hair follicle where it is absorbed. The laser energy is transformed into heat which destroys the hair follicle and leaves the surrounding skin unaffected.
What is a treatment like?
Laser hair removal treatments are fairly quick and the discomfort level is slight. It does not have to be painful in order for the treatment to be successful. Topical anesthetic is available for treatment to provide maximum comfort.
How can I expect to look after a treatment?
It is expected that we will see some perifollicular edema (red, raised bumps that look a lot like little “ant bites”) after the treatment. This usually subsides within 24 hours. It is necessary to keep the area cool and free from any type of friction to avoid the skin becoming irritated and to use sun protection daily on the area being treated so as not to cause unwanted results.
How many treatments will I need?
How many treatments you need depends upon your skin color, hair color, and coarseness of the hair. Since hair grows in cycles, and the process is only effective on hair during the early growing cycle, everyone will require repeat sessions. Laser does not work on grey, blonde, or white hair. For these colors of hair please see the information on electrolysis.
What results can I expect to see?
There is great attention given to the growth of hair throughout the series as we expect to see less growth and longer growth cycles as we treat. Our goal is for you to feel like each treatment has lessened the visibility of hair. It will take many treatments to reach the ultimate goal of smooth skin, but each visit should create visual results if treatments are done on the schedule your provider has set forth.
What must I do after getting laser hair removal?
To avoid possible side effects, all patients need to protect their skin from the sun. After laser hair removal, you should:
Avoid direct sunlight from hitting your treated skin.
Not use a tanning bed, sun lamp, or any other indoor tanning equipment.
Do not take a hot bath or get in a hot tub for the first 24 hours of treatment. Follow your provider’s after-care instructions.
You may see some redness and swelling after treatment. This often looks like a mild sunburn or even small ant bites from the follicular response. Applying a cool compress can help reduce your discomfort.
Is there downtime?
No, laser hair removal generally does not require any real downtime. Immediately after having laser hair removal, your treated skin may be red and swollen. Despite this, most people return to their everyday activities. The only thing to be aware of is not getting the skin heated up through excessive exercise or sweating.
When will I see the results after having laser hair removal?
You will likely see the results after your first treatment. The results vary from patient to patient. The color and thickness of your hair, area treated, type of laser used, and color of your skin all affect the results.
To remove the hair, most patients need 6 to 10 laser treatments. After finishing the treatments, most patients do not see any hair on the treated skin for several months or even years. When the hair regrows, there tends to be less of it. The hairs also tend to be finer and lighter in color.
How long will the results of laser hair removal last?
Most patients remain hair free for months or even years. When some of the hair regrows, it will likely be less noticeable. To keep the area free of hair, a patient may need maintenance laser treatments.
What are the possible side effects?
The most common side effects are minor and last 1 to 3 days. These side effects include:
Other possible side effects, while rare when being treated by a licensed professional, include:
- Herpes Simplex (cold sores)
- Skin lightening or darkening
It is also important to follow your provider’s instructions. Following both the before-treatment instructions and after-treatment instructions will greatly reduce your risk of adverse side effects.
When is it safe to have another laser treatment for hair removal?
This varies from patient to patient. Removing hair often requires a series of laser treatments. Most patients can have laser hair removal once every 4 to 6 weeks. Your provider will tell you when it is safe to have another treatment.
Most patients see some hair regrowth between treatments. Your provider can tell you when you can safely have laser treatments to maintain the results.
What is the safety record for laser hair removal?
Lasers play an important role in treating many conditions that affect the skin, hair, and nails.
In recent years, many advances have been made in laser medicine.
One such advance is that more people can safely have laser hair removal. In the past, only people with dark hair and light skin could safely have laser hair removal.
Today, laser hair removal is a treatment option for patients who have light-colored hair and light skin and patients who have dark skin. Laser hair removal must be performed very carefully in these patients. Licensed professionals know what precautions to take to provide laser hair removal safely and effectively.
