Men are increasingly turning to cosmetic treatments to reap the social and professional benefits that give them an edge in both the social realm and in the work place. The goal for men, when it comes to cosmetic treatments, is not to have porcelain smooth skin or higher cheekbones. Men tend to favor a rejuvenated look that gives them confidence and the impression of health and vigor that pays off both socially and in the office. According to The American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the number of cosmetic procedures for men has increased over 106 per cent since 1997, accounting for roughly 10 per cent of all cosmetic procedures performed in 2012 for both genders.

Men Are Getting Botox®

Botox® is becoming a universal non-invasive cosmetic procedure among both genders. According to the ASPS, 390,000 Botox® treatments were administered to male patients in 2012 alone, a 7 per cent increase from 2011. Botox® temporarily inhibits muscle contractions around problem areas, with results that last up to four months on average. One of the most common uses of Botox® for men is to smooth out deep lines of the forehead. Other issues including crows feet, brow furrow lines and smile lines are also effectively treated with Botox®.

Other Dermal Fillers

Hyaluronic acid is a substance naturally found throughout the body, whose stores become depleted with age. They are tied to collagen production and are a very powerful humectant for the skin and rest of the body. Hyaluronic acid based fillers including Juvederm® and Restylaneare alternatives to Botox®, each with slightly different characteristics to suit the individual.

Skin Resurfacing Treatments

The American Academy of Facial Plastic Reconstructive Surgery notes that skin resurfacing treatments among the country’s male population has increased by a whopping 417 per cent since 2004! Treatments such as microdermabrasion and chemical peels are used to remove layers of damaged skin cells, revealing more rejuvenated skin underneath.
